ChatGPT Plus Complete Guide 2026: 14 Features Tested on Real Work

If you still use ChatGPT as a simple chat, you miss most of it. Canvas has been replaced, Custom GPTs stop working on 11 December 2026, and most of what I use every day for business work didn't exist a year ago. So I didn't go through every button. I picked the 14 features that actually change how work gets done and tested each one on a real task with real files. Everything below runs on ChatGPT Plus, $20 a month.

The demo company is a coffee roastery in Riga, Baltic Bean Roasters. We start with the basics and finish with an AI that keeps working after you close the laptop.

Level 1: the basics

1. Five small things everything else depends on

• Get the desktop app. Most of this guide needs it: it can work with folders and programs on your computer.
• Pick the model per task. A fast model for drafts and quick questions, a smarter one (or higher reasoning) for numbers, contracts and anything you are going to sign.
• Appshots. Press both Alt keys (both Command keys on a Mac) and ChatGPT sees the window you have open. I drafted a reply to a supplier's 8% price increase without copying a single line of the e-mail.
• Permissions. Before it edits a file or sends something, it asks. You decide whether it asks every time or approves routine steps.
• /usage and training. Type /usage to see how much of your limit is left, and switch off "Improve the model for everyone" under Data controls.

2. Projects: one client, one folder, one memory

A project has its own files, instructions and memory, and the memory stays inside the project. I pointed one at a folder with a real-size hotel tender: an 11-page RFP, a clarification letter that changes the rules, two versions of the price form and our internal price list. It found the moved deadline (20 October), told me to use version 2 of the price form, listed every conflict with what our board allows (45-day payment, prices fixed for 36 months) and noticed we pass the turnover requirement only because of the 2025 figure. Then it compared two coffees for the price form: the cheaper one versus the certified one that earns more sustainability points.

One setting matters more than any prompt: use Work, not Chat. Chat is the brain. Work can also run commands on your computer and open your files.

3. The / @ $ keys

Most people never press them. / opens commands (/plan makes ChatGPT show its plan and wait for your approval, /goal is further down). @ calls an app or plugin: Gmail, Chrome, Outlook, computer use, your sites. $ lists your skills.

Level 2: AI with your data

4. Connectors

@Gmail Find the latest e-mail from Hotel Daugava procurement and list their questions. It went into my mailbox, found the e-mail and listed the four questions. Connect more apps under Customize.

5. Computer use: no connector needed

I don't have an Outlook connector, but I have the Outlook app. So I asked ChatGPT to prepare me for the day, and it opened Outlook itself, clicked through yesterday's e-mails and told me which 13 deserve attention and which can wait. It's slower than a connector, but it works with any program on your computer.

6. A folder on your computer

Every accountant knows a folder like this: 44 scans called scan_0003, invoice (4), WhatsApp Image. One prompt: rename every file by date, supplier, type and number, sort them into folders and build an index. It also flagged the duplicate scan, the pro forma that isn't an invoice and an invoice addressed to a different company with a similar name.

7. /goal: it works until the job is done

A normal chat answers and stops. With /goal you set a finish line, and ChatGPT keeps working, checking itself, until it's reached. I asked it to reconcile every document in that folder with 600+ bank transactions. It linked each payment to its document and listed excess payments and payments with documents missing.

Level 3: inside the programs you use

8. ChatGPT in Excel

A budget model going to the bank for a loan: 10 sheets, about 1,700 formulas, and two covenants saying BREACH although the plan should pass. The add-in traced the formulas and found four errors: revenue from July used the wrong row, one month had a number typed over a formula, the yearly total skipped December and the loan payment used the annual rate instead of the monthly one. Then it told me the margin now passes by only 0.2 percentage points, which I'd rather hear from ChatGPT than from the bank.

Second test: 10,535 sales lines, and a request for a dashboard built only on formulas. Change the country or segment in the dropdown and every number and chart updates.

9. ChatGPT in PowerPoint

Usually you don't need a new deck, you need one more slide that looks like the rest. It added a Q3-vs-Q2 slide with a real, editable chart in the deck's own design. And from a five-page memo it built a ten-slide deck for the bank's credit committee in about ten minutes.

Level 4: AI does the work for you

10. The browser agent

With the Chrome extension, ChatGPT works in your real browser. It checked 12 suppliers and customers in the EU VIES VAT register, filled the results into my sheet and marked the mistyped number as invalid. Think of every public register you check by hand for KYC or onboarding.

11. Write like me

Turn on "Reference my writing style" in Personalization and connect the apps where you write yourself. I asked for the same LinkedIn post twice: without the skill it sounded like every other AI post; with it, it sounded like me.

12. Sites

One prompt built Euro Business Pulse, a small site for business owners in the Baltics: live exchange rates, ECB rates and Euribor, a converter and a daily history. About 30 minutes from prompt to a link I can send to clients.

Level 5: AI works without you

13. Scheduled tasks

Describe a job once and pick when it runs: hourly, daily or on weekdays, in the cloud (your computer can be off) or on your computer. My site now refreshes its data every day on its own.

14. Remote control

Scan a QR code once, and your phone controls the ChatGPT app on your office PC. From a café I asked for a payment list of everything due by 14 October, after credit notes, overpayments and a double payment. The file was waiting on my office computer when I got back.

Where to start

You don't need all 14 tomorrow. Take the basics and one feature from the end of the list, and use them for a week. All the demo files and prompts are above, so you can repeat every step on your own computer. Everything in the video ran on a fictional company; before you point this at real client files, check your own data rules.
