AI was a tool. You asked it a question, then did the work yourself.

Today

AI is a worker. You hand it the job, then check what comes back.

An 80-year-old Erdős problem, broken by a machine

Put n dots on paper. How many pairs can be exactly 1 cm apart? On the right: 7 dots, 11 such pairs.

Paul Erdős guessed in 1946 that the count grows only a hair faster than n. For 80 years nobody could settle it.

An OpenAI reasoning model built dot patterns that beat Erdős's guess. Nine outside mathematicians, among them Tim Gowers and Noga Alon, checked and explained it.

"AI is a bubble. And that's fine."

Agree 0

Anthropic lost $81B in six months on $16B revenue (mostly an accounting charge). Amazon's free cash flow swung to a $42B outflow. Nvidia guarantees its own customer's data centre. Railways and dot-com crashed too, and left the tracks and the fibre behind.

Disagree 0

Bubbles don't usually come with customers. ChatGPT has over a billion users, Anthropic's half-year revenue went from $1.2B to $16.3B, and Cursor reached $3B in yearly revenue in about two years.

ACT II

Companies rebuilt
around it

If AI can do the work, what is a company? Y Combinator's answer: a set of loops.

Y Combinator · Diana Hu · Startup School, April 2026

Every important process in your company should be captured by an intelligent closed loop.

Most companies today: open loop
Decide→Execute→nobody measures→nothing learns
AI-native: closed loop
Capture→Feed to AI→Improve↺Repeat, daily
Tom Blomfield · YC partner, founder of Monzo

A company is a set of recursive, self-improving AI loops.

Four parts. The last one makes it a loop: whatever failed today goes back in at the top.

Support: Intercom Fin

The agent answers from the knowledge base. Tests flag the chats it failed. Hard cases go to a person. Every failure becomes new content.

Engineering: Anthropic

Claude wrote over 80% of the code merged in May, by Anthropic's count. Tests and AI review check it; humans approve. Their words: "human review is now the bottleneck".

Growth: the overnight A/B test

The agent finds the worst step in the sales funnel, runs an A/B test for a week, ships the winner, and starts again. No meeting needed.

Knowledge: YC itself

Staff use internal agents all day. Every night another agent reads those conversations and improves the skills, so tomorrow's agent knows more.

Debate 03
05:00

"An AI company should be allowed to say no to its own government."

Agree 0

The builders understand the risks best, and their limits were public before the contract. If labs can't refuse, every safety rule lasts only until the next election.

Disagree 0

Elected governments decide defence, not CEOs. A private company controlling critical technology shouldn't hold a veto. And OpenAI said yes the same day, so the "no" changed little.

If 10–20% unemployment arrives within five years, retraining can't keep up. Even the labs agree: OpenAI proposes a public wealth fund and four-day-week trials; Amodei a ~3% token tax.

Debate 05

Musk's plan needs about 10,000 launches a year. You can't repair a GPU in orbit. Altman calls it "ridiculous" for now, and SpaceX's own IPO filing is less sure.

What you do on Monday

Be the person who closes the loop

  1. Make your work readable. Write down how you do things: prompts, checklists, decisions. Agents can only use what is written.
  2. Learn to specify and to check. The spec and the test are the new job. Taste in judging output beats speed in typing it.
  3. Go deep in one field. AI makes average cheap. Knowing when a number smells wrong is not.
  4. Ship something with agents every month. Entry-level hiring is shrinking. Proof of work beats a CV.
  5. Own what agents can't: relationships, responsibility, judgement. Klarna, Duolingo and Block all brought humans back for a reason.
